The Bohunice estate and its buildings

The Brno-Bohunice district consists of a single cadastral area, and more than 14,000 people live here. The landscape is rolling, with noticeable differences in height, and it is dominated by a large prefab estate.

Bohunice borders Starý and Nový Lískovec, the Brno-střed and Brno-jih districts and, to the south, the village of Moravany. For much of its length, the boundary with Starý Lískovec follows Osová street. In the eastern part of the estate the streets are named after the republics of the former Soviet Union, such as Ukrajinská and Moldavská. Bohunice is linked to the city centre by tram and by several bus and trolleybus lines.

Bohunice was first mentioned in writing in 1237. It became part of Brno in 1919 but remained a village until the 1970s. In the late 1960s it was decided to build an estate for 30,000 people on unused land in Bohunice and Starý Lískovec. Construction in the 1970s turned a village of about 2,000 people (as counted in 1962) into a huge building site: parts of the old village were demolished, and fields, allotments and orchards gave way to prefab blocks.

At the same time the D1 motorway was being built along the southern edge of the area, with the railway from Brno to Střelice running just north of it. Together with the estate, the motorway transformed the landscape around the old village.
